BradfordI first heard the Bradford song "Gang of One" on Sire Records' Just Say Da (Volume IV of Just Say Yes) compilation (1990). The little write-up of the band emphasized that Morrissey liked them; this was an attempt to attract Morrissey fans to the album. In fact, I heard that Bradford toured with Morrissey for a while. The Shouting Quietly album was produced by Smiths/Morrissey producer Stephen Street. Moz even did a cover of "Skin Storm" that appeared on his "My Love Life" or "Pregnant for the Last Time" singles (depending on what continent you live on). You'd think Morrissey fans would turn out in droves to pick up Bradford's debut, right?

Wrong. The album didn't sell well at all, and the band was dropped from the record company. It's too bad, really. Bradford showed a lot of promise. Maybe they'll resurface someday.

Shouting Quietly is not easy to find. I found my copy in a used record store (and it was marked down pretty cheap). Those interested in finding a copy may have to browze the used record stores like I did.

Shouting Quietly is not a great album, but it's not all that bad. The band sounds a lot like Elvis Costello and the Attractions, except that the bass is not as pronounced. My favorite song here is "Radio Edna".

A note for Morrissey fans: Moz didn't sing "Skin Storm" exactly as it was written. The original song chorus says:

And oh what a storm
When it's wet and warm
Oh what a storm
When it's wet and warm
We shelter in our skin storm

Morrissey left out the lines about "wet and warm". Does it change the meaning?

There isn't much on Bradford on the internet. I guess nobody's interested in this band. There is a short (and negative) review of Shouting Quietly, but that's about it. Let me know if you find anything else.
