Mark NevinI first heard of Mark Nevin from his collaboration with Morrissey on the Kill Uncle album. Later, I saw his name associated with Kirsty MacColl, for whom he wrote and produced songs and played guitar. This association was part of the reason that I bought one of Kirsty's albums. So after all that, I was intrigued when I found out that Mark had released a solo album.

Mark Nevin has worked with a lot of musicians over the years, most notably as a member of Fairground Attraction. He finally decided that he would like to do a solo album where he sang his own songs. Hopefully this means he won't completely abandon his projects with others, although we wish him success in his solo endeavors.

Mark Nevin's first solo album is a collection of rather quiet songs with simple, yet catchy, arrangements. His acoustic guitar is, of course, beautiful. My baby daughter fell asleep right after I started playing it the first time. My wife commented that his vocal style is very similar to Bob Dylan's, and I would agree. Mark sometimes seems unsure of his voice at the beginning of the song, but then seems to gain confidence as the song progresses. "Queen of Angels" is the lone track produced by Stephen Lipson, and it sounds like it; it is the album's most commercial song. My favorite here is "You Don't Have to Make Me Laugh". This album shows promise for future solo projects.
