Alison "Alf" Moyet is a very soulful vocalist who has gone pretty much unnoticed by the public, especially in the U.S. The first Alf solo album I had was Essex, her 1994 album produced by Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds. (She, in turn, sang a duet with Broudie on the Lightning Seeds song "My Best Day".) Of course, Essex actually belongs to my brother, so I'm contenting myself with the Singles compilation for now. I hope to pick up more Alf music as my funds permit. |

I really like this album. It's too bad that Alison Moyet hasn't attracted a larger audience than she has. The first and last tracks on this album are new, three songs are by Yaz, and the rest are from Alison's previous albums. My favorites are "Invisible", "Is This Love?", and "Whispering Your Name". "Ode to Boy II" is a remake of the Yaz song that appeared on her Essex album. The Singles collection is a good summary album for non-fans.
By the way, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was written by Ewan MacColl, the father of Kirsty MacColl.
