The Lightning Seeds started out as Echo and the Bunnymen producer Ian Broudie's solo project. He worked with several people on his first three albums. Some names show up pretty consistently on every album: Simon Rogers, Ian McNab (or McNabb - it shows up both ways), and Terry Hall. Broudie actually organized a band for the fourth album, Dizzy Heights and went on a pretty extensive tour. Ian Broudie is, however, primarily a producer. He continues to produce other artists' albums in between Lightning Seeds albums. Ian Broudie has an interesting voice. It's kind of high, and it doesn't have a lot of body. It isn't a really commanding voice, but it blends well with the music. I told my wife once that if I had the time and money to record my music in a studio it would sound like the Lightning Seeds. The music is mostly keyboards accompanied by whole-chord acoustic guitar. I really like the sound of it. While a lot of the songs sound similar, I look forward to the next Seeds album. |

Dizzy Heights is the Lightning Seeds' first release on their new label, Epic. I read that the record company really wanted Ian Broudie to treat the Lightning Seeds like a band, instead of a side project to his producing career. So Ian assembled a band and went on tour! A big change, right?
Well, not exactly. Dizzy Heights doesn't break a lot of new ground. The songs still sound like older Seeds songs (especially "What if..."). I'm not complaining, though. I like the older stuff, so it's OK with me if it sounds the same. I really like the opening track "Imaginary Friends" and "Fingers and Thumbs" on this album.

This album represents the Lightning Seeds brief stint on Trauma Records. It's too bad that it's hard to find a copy of this album, because it's their best. The album is very Beatlesque (The Beatles with keyboards!), especially tracks like "Perfect". "My Best Day" is a duet with Alison Moyet, for whom Ian prodouced the album Essex. There isn't a single stinker on this album. If you can find a copy of it, I highly recommend picking it up.

Sense is a very upbeat and lively album. The melodies are catchy, and I almost can't keep myself from singing along with some of the songs. The sounds are layered very well; the music on Sense is quite an improvement over Cloudcuckooland. My favorites here are "The Life of Riley" and "Blowing Bubbles".

This album is not bad, but it gets a little bit slow at times. The rhythms are good, but the production is kind of thin. The best songs are "Pure" (which is pure and simple), "All I Want", and "Sweet Dreams". Andy McCluskey of O.M.D. contributed keyboard work on "Frenzy".
