OMD is credited with being one of the first synth-pop bands and a big influence on future Euro-pop artists. The group started as a duo: Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphries. Andy was the musician; Paul was the electronics expert. The duo picked up and dropped several members along the way. When the Best of OMD album came out, the band consisted of Andy, Paul, Martin Cooper, and Malcolm Holmes. The band broke up, and Andy worked alone but kept the "OMD" name. Paul, Martin, and Malcolm formed The Listening Pool. Since I don't have any entire OMD albums prior to The Best of OMD, it's hard to compare what Andy has done on his own. I have one of the three albums he has put out since the band broke up. I heard parts of Liberator, and I wasn't too impressed. Universal came out in 1996, but I haven't heard it. Likewise, I haven't heard anything by The Listening Pool. Andy contributed keyboard work on the Lightning Seeds album Cloucuckooland. |

Sugar Tax has some really good songs on it. "Pandora's Box", "Speed of Light", and "Call My Name" are all very catchy pop tunes. "Apollo XI" is an interesting instrumental with sound samples from the famed moon landing. "Was It Something I Said" was one of the first songs for which I figured out the chords to play on my guitar. The album as a whole is not fabulous, though. "Walk Tall" is laughably dumb, and a couple of the others are pretty boring.

Early OMD songs were simple, short, and very catchy. This compilation should be titled How to Write a Perfect Pop Song. These songs are really that good. Some standouts are "Souvenir" (one of my all-time favorites), "So in Love", and "Forever Live and Die". The inclusion of "We Love You" and "La Femme Accident" is also nice. (The remix of the latter is much better than the original.) The only tracks that I'm not wild about are "Joan of Arc" and "Maid of Orleans" (coincidentally, Joan of Arc is the Maid of Orleans), but they're really not too bad. Everyone should own this album, but unfortunately it is now out of print.
Martin Gore played "Electricity" while singing at a piano bar with his friends. The moment has been distributed as a bootleg recording.
